It is a sensor. I found a name on it ( Hamlin) and tracked down a company that sells them, my part looks just like the one in the picture. hxxp://parts.digikey.ca/1/1/13188-sensor-magnetic-spst-no-10w-59025-010.html
replace xx's
but the part numbers are worn off.

That looks kind of like the type for home alarm systems. Test it like I said but run a magnet near the end that has no wires. It may be one of those type and is so it must be seated all the way down the hole to see a magnet that rotates. Yours might still be good.
